Commentary

Bodmer's Indian studies at Natchez describe individuals living under conditions similar to those earlier observed among the Choctaws in New Orleans. Bodmer later reported to Maximilian that one Indian at Natchez tried to sell him a wild turkey for a dollar. Another, he said, tried to persuade him to take two "partly bad" beaver hides. Although a slight contradiction exists between the inscription at lower left of this watercolor and others on the reverse, possibly added later, it seems to have been made around February 1.
