Bodmer's pencil drawing of a spermophile or ground squirrel is dated April 4, 1834, and was made at Fort Clark during the artist's sojourn there during the winter and spring of 1833-34. No reference to Bodmer's having sketched such an animal is found in Maximilian's journal for the period.
