At the time of Maximilian's expedition, the Kickapoo had just been moved to a new reservation in Kansas, one of many relocations in the troubled history of this tribe originally from the Wisconsin area. Maximilian makes little reference to the Kickapoos, but obviously encountered a few individuals in St. Louis, as evidenced by these two portraits of young men.
