Commentary

Passítopa ("Four") was another of the three Ponca men taken on board the Yellow Stone on May 11. A brother of the chief Schudegácheh (see Image 1986.49.241), Passítopa had recently achieved some renown for protecting a white friend from an attack by another Indian. He is dressed in everyday garb for this unexpected portrait, his only visible ornament a neckband of bright ribbon or beads.
