At the Sioux agency on May 1, 1834, Maximilian had Bodmer sketch a tree scaffold burial. This particular grave had apparently been observed the previous year and may be the one Maximilian drew in his diary on May 26, 1833. On the reverse of the drawing there are notes in what appears to be Bodmer's handwriting for adding color to the work. A finished painting may never have been done, however, for there are no related watercolors or aquatints in the collection.
