On the morning of May 12, Bodmer sketched two Ponca Indians on the riverbank. There had been a frost during the night, and the men huddled in their buffalo robes, the thick mat of hair turned inward for warmth. From the diaries it can be inferred that this drawing represents one or both of the individuals portrayed in Plates 171 and 172. A virtually identical woodcut illustrates the text of Travels in the Interior of North America.
