March 15, 1833
Early in the morning, bright, clear sky, sunshine. At seven thirty, 1°R [34.3°F, 1.3°C]. We worked at home, packed, and made a parting visit before noon to Mr. Owen. At twelve o’clock, 11°R [56.8°F, 13.8°C]. Today I learned that a large flight of swallows had already been seen yesterday. In the forenoon we packed up and made all preparations to leave. In the afternoon, visits to Mr. Maclure, Mr. Twigg, Mr. Lesueur, and in the evening, at the home of Mr. Say. After a stay of almost five months in New Harmony, we took a very heartfelt leave of some good friends, especially Mr. Say and Mr. Lesueur, who had shown us ample proof of their kindness during our stay here. The sojourn in Harmony, in spite of the unfavorable time of year, nevertheless taught us much about this part of Indiana and was of great value for our collections.
