July 20, 1834
The wind blew the same as yesterday, but it increased; the sky was overcast with gray clouds. We tacked or maneuvered back and forth. High, strong waves roll[ed] toward us. Today we no longer saw petrels. [At] noon, latitude 37°30′, longitude 66°20′. In the afternoon the wind abated a little; at six o’clock, 77°F [25°C], water temperature 78°F [25.5°C]. At midmorning the water was 78°F [25.5°C], the air 76°F [24.4°C]. The evening was very pleasant, moonlit, light wind, pleasant temperature. We saw the first Physalia, or Portuguese man-of-war. Today the wind was [from the] east.
