August 4, 1834

Nice weather, almost clear sky. Wind more favorable. About eight o’clock we were making nine knots. Soon the wind became very brisk, with fine rain [and a] cloudy horizon. Many dolphins. About one o’clock we made ten knots. The studding-sail on the foretopmast was still up, the brisk wind notwithstanding. At midmorning we saw two whalelike creatures. About three to four o’clock we were still making nine to ten knots.

The wind turned into a gale, the seas soon become very high, [and] heavy squalls alternated. The royals and the mainsail were taken down; the studding- sails had been taken down long ago. Latitude 49°7′, longitude 18°3′. Intermittent rain. The ship [rocked] severely, also during the night. The wind today [from the] south and west.
