July 26, 1834

Always the same good wind. At eight o’clock, the ship made six knots. The sky was slightly cloudy. At twelve o’clock, latitude 42°3′, longitude 52°37′. About noon, the wind was blowing much more briskly—eight knots. We were almost below the southern tip of the Newfoundland bank [Grand Banks].

Since yesterday the sailors have scraped the rear [stern?] of the ship thoroughly, [preparing] to paint it anew. In the afternoon the wind turned and became brisk; we made nine and a half knots the entire afternoon. Rain in the evening; stormy, very dark. Wind today west by north.
