July 22, 1834

In the night a small favorable breeze developed; about noon, strong wind, then overcast. All studding-sails remained up. We noticed Portuguese men-of-war but neither fish nor birds. After noon, a little more wind; the ship made three and a half miles or knots an hour. After noon the wind became more favorable. A rain shower fell, then it was almost calm. About two o’clock, an excellent, brisk wind blew. We saw individual flying fish [and] two ships in the distance. A great deal of Fucus vesiculosus. In the evening, a very brisk, favorable breeze; in the night, a storm [with] thunder, lightning, [and] heavy rain. Wind today [from the] south and southwest, also south-southwest.
