In the morning, hazy horizon. At six o’clock, we lay near Sandy Hook, a little out from the lighthouse, and had very little wind. After nine o’clock, clear sky, light wind; we made about five knots. The wind was fairly good. After eleven thirty, the Fire Island lighthouse was to the left in the distance; it is 40 miles from Sandy Hook. The evening was pleasant. The forenoon was beautiful, the evening more pleasant. Midmorning nice; in the afternoon, a thunderstorm. Raw, strong wind; evening more pleasant. The seas [were] turbulent in the night. The wind was [from the] south today.
