December 19, 1833

In the morning, very beautifully bright and clear, calm. At seven thirty, 17° 15 °F [−9.4°C]. The Missouri rose substantially and flowed over the ice in places. Dreidoppel went hunting. An Indian brought the pelt of a white rabbit, which I bought. At twelve o’clock, calm, beautiful weather. At twelve thirty, 22°F [−5.6°C]. Dreidoppel came back and had not shot a thing. He saw three wolves, two of them schähä́ckäs. In the evening Síh-Sä and his companion returned [early]. They met enemies on the prairie and immediately fled; therefore, the horse will be lost. Evening calm and bright. This evening two white men arrived in the lower Mandan village, but nobody knew yet who they were and where they came from.
