March 19, 1834

Cloudy sky early, cold, not much wind. At seven thirty, 7 1/2°F [−13.6°C]. North wind. Síh-Chidä visited us. He brought his shield to have a bird painted on it. Kipp had received—what a surprise!—a buffalo tongue. At twelve o’clock, 16 1/2°F [−8.6°C]. Light wind out of the north. Sky cloudy. In the afternoon we were told that there were many buffalo about two hours from Ruhptare. Unfortunately, most Indians were away with their horses. Dreidoppel went out, shot [a] Fringilla canadensis, [and] saw schähä́ckäs. In the evening, cloudy, calm, a little cold.
