July 25, 1834

In the morning, some rain, then the sky was slightly cloudy. Weather pleasant. About eight o’clock, sunshine. The wind was moderate; six knots, but [this] increased to seven knots [at] about ten o’clock. Someone saw a shark. The weather was magnificent, and the seas [were] dark blue. Procellaria pelagica flew around us.

An American swallow (Hirundo [——]) was caught on the ship. On the other hand, one of my American blue finches (Fringilla cyanea) flew away, and we neither saw nor heard it again. Latitude [——]′, longitude 55°20′.

About five o’clock, [we saw] many dolphins. They jumped several feet high out of the water and often loudly slapped the surface with their tails. The evening was cool. At ten thirty in the night, rain. About eleven o’clock, [there was] a pale yellow moon rainbow opposite the moon; however, [it was] not multicolored. Wind today west by north.
