April 30, 1834
Very heavy rain all day long, but we sailed on. Descoteaux had stayed behind but appeared on a sandbar at eight o’clock, completely drenched, [and] we took him on. At seven thirty, 49°F [9.4°C]. Wind northeast hora 5. At noon, 53°F [11.7°C]. We put ashore several times; the men made a fire and warmed and dried themselves a little. Because they were so thoroughly soaked, we landed on the left bank very early in the evening and lit fires. Here there was a beautiful, wild forest of one-and-a-half-foot-thick cedars (Juniperus virginiana) growing in wild disorder. The rain stopped in the evening, and the night was nice and clear.
