In the morning, clear; before sun [rise], −20°F [−28.9°C]. The sun rose brightly. At seven thirty, 0°F [−17.8°C]. Wind very strong from the southwest. [It was] very cold, the air filled with ice particles. Cháratä-Numakschi came into the fort early; later Mató-Tópe [came]. I described the gopher. In the afternoon, the wind [was] very cold and strong out of the west [—-—]. At twelve thirty, 24°F [−4.4°C]. In the afternoon the cold broke. By two thirty it was already 4°F warmer than at twelve thirty (28°F [−2.2°C]) [and] no longer cold. The wind was very strong and drove the snow into the air. Síh-Chidä visited us. The evening [was] clear, very windy, and warm. At nine o’clock, 30°F [−1.1°C].
