Route of Maximilian’s 1833 voyage down the Ohio and up the Mississippi River, from Mount Vernon, Indiana, to St. Louis, Missouri.

March 27, 1833

Because our itinerary for the coming summer had not yet been determined, I went to see Mr. McKenzie, the principal director and owner of the Northwest Fur Company. He is expecting the ship Yellow Stone, with which he will go up the Missouri to the Yellowstone River. This ship never takes passengers, and therefore whether we will travel on it is still uncertain. At Mr. McKenzie’s I made the acquaintance of Major Dougherty, who had traveled with Major Long to the Rocky Mountains.

Later we had Indians in our house who were sketched. We served them apples and almonds, cigarros, and the like and also paid them for this sitting. They were very happy to be sketched.
