July 31, 1834

The same brisk wind, foggy horizon, pleasant weather. Every sail set! At eight o’clock, eight knots. [As of] yesterday we had already covered a little more than half the distance [to Europe]. A few nice, black seabirds flew high around the ship: Struntjäger [arctic gulls]? The breeze continued. At the same time, the horizon was always foggy. Shuffle was played again on deck, [even] with all this wind. Latitude 46°41′, longitude 33°15′. In the afternoon we saw many porpoises but could not catch any. In the evening [a] fine mist was falling. We made eight knots the whole night with the same wind. Wind today [from the] southwest.
