Snowstorm about daybreak, sky heavily overcast. Wind soon severe out of the north; heavy snow flurries until about ten o’clock. At seven thirty, 29 1/2°F [−1.4°C]. The sun appeared as a dim, yellowish spot in the gray clouds. Ravens came close to the fort. Today no Indian women were to be seen on [or] across the river. The Hidatsa partisan lay down at our place and slept. Máhchsi-Karéhde was here almost all morning. At twelve o’clock, 22°F [−5.6°C]. Wind very strong out of the northeast. In the afternoon, raw, windy, and cold. Wind very strong. We were without any Indians and worked at home. Evening starlit, calm, slightly cold.
