July 19, 1834
Cloudy sky, brisk unfavorable wind. Large numbers of Procellaria pelagica around, especially behind the ship. Early, we saw a ship that sailed in the direction of America. [At] twelve o’clock noon, latitude 39°20′, longitude 67°38′. Very strong wind in the afternoon, half contrary [to our ship’s course]; the seas very high; this continued during the night. Wind today east-northeast.
