Early in the morning, bright, strong east wind; at seven thirty, 10°F [−12.2°C]. Péhriska-Rúhpa and Mató-Tópe visited us: the former had shot three buffalo; the other, two buffalo. They gave away most of the meat and two woolen blankets. At noon, cloudy sky, 30°F [−1.1°C]. Severe wind out of the east. The Hidatsas came back with much meat, as did Bonneaventure Le Brun, who, however, had not shot anything for me. Charbonneau went to the villages. Someone saw the first eagle today. [In the] evening, cloudy and stormy. In the night the wind abated; it snowed. I got the first prairie dog.
