We embarked early on the steamboat Independence and reached [South] Amboy, where we boarded the railroad stages that stand there ready whenever a ship arrives. We were instantly pulled away by the steam engine and had [——] miles to Bordentown, where we arrived before noon. On the road there were some very nice clumps of bushes, [and] some species of shrubs bloomed very beautifully. A large part of the distance was somewhat sandy. In Bordentown, the steamboat Philadelphia waited for us; we ate lunch [on board] and arrived in Philadelphia at four or five o’clock.
