Chapter Summary

Voyage from Europe to Boston

Maximilian’s expedition began with a 48-day voyage from Europe to America. Maximilian, Bodmer, and Driedoppel departed from the Dutch port of Helvoet on the brig Janus. Always at the mercy of the weather, the sail-powered ship was frequently subjected to violent storms, then becalmed by windless days.

May 25, 1832

Moderately weak wind, overcast sky. A [barn] swallow (Hirundo rustica) flies aboard. A sloop sails past. In the distance several ships. Noon observation: latitude 49°27', longitude 7°30'. In the afternoon an English battleship (probably seventy-four cannon) proudly sails northward past us and hoists its flag; we do the same. Wind rather good. Several porpoises. In the evening a Dutch brig from Havana, which had made the voyage in forty days. We converse with it.
