September 21, 1832

At nine o’clock in the evening, we left Harrisburg with the stage and continued our journey in the usual manner until daybreak, during which time we changed horses several times. We drove across the bridges of the Juniata River Susquehanna River and then across the Juniata, which emerges from the Allegheny Mountains and empties into the former. For a long time, the road runs along a high, steep bank of the river; the road was so narrow that, by moonlight and the light of our lanterns, the situation looked very dangerous.
